What is kundli matching?

Kundli matching — also called kundali milan, horoscope matching or Guna Milan — is the Vedic way of checking how well two people are suited for marriage. It compares the two birth charts, above all the position of the Moon in each, and scores the match out of 36 gunas using the classical Ashtakoot (eight-fold) system. A higher score points to easier natural harmony; specific low scores flag areas to look at more closely.

The 8 Kutas of Ashtakoot Guna Milan (36 points)

Each koota tests a different layer of compatibility and carries a different weight. Together they add up to 36:

KootaPointsWhat it checks
Varna1Spiritual compatibility and ego balance — the working harmony of the two natures.
Vashya2Mutual attraction and influence — who naturally draws and holds the other.
Tara / Dina3Health, wellbeing and destiny — birth-star compatibility for a stable life together.
Yoni4Physical and intimate compatibility, read from the birth-star animal symbols.
Graha Maitri5Mental and intellectual bond — the friendship between the two Moon-sign lords.
Gana6Temperament match — Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa nature and how they meet.
Bhakoot7Love, family welfare and prosperity, from the distance between the two Moon signs.
Nadi8Health and progeny — the constitutional (genetic) match; the most weighted koota.

What score is good for marriage?

As a guide: 18+ out of 36 is considered acceptable, 24–32 is very good, and above 32 is excellent. A score below 18 is traditionally not recommended without a closer reading. But treat the number as a starting point, not a verdict — the two doshas below matter more than a point or two either way.

Nadi & Bhakoot dosha

The two most weighted kutas — Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) — are where most real concerns show up. Nadi dosha arises when both partners share the same Nadi (0 of 8), classically linked to health and children. Bhakoot dosha comes from certain Moon-sign distances and touches money and family harmony. Both have well-known cancellations — same rashi with different nakshatras, or friendly/identical Moon-sign lords — which this tool already factors into the result.

Matching is not the whole story

Guna Milan is the first layer, not the last word. A complete marriage match also weighs Manglik (Mangal) dosha, the 7th house and its lord, the strength of Venus and Jupiter, and the dasha timing for marriage in each chart. For that full picture, read both people’s complete kundlis:

Kundli matching — common questions

What is a good Guna Milan score for marriage?

Out of 36 gunas, 18 and above is traditionally considered acceptable, 24–32 is very good, and above 32 is excellent. Below 18 is usually not recommended without a deeper look. But the number is only a guide — a lower score with no serious dosha can be fine, and a high score does not cancel a Nadi or Bhakoot dosha. A full chart reading matters more than the headline number.

Is kundli matching by Moon sign or Sun sign?

Ashtakoot Guna Milan is calculated from the Moon (Chandra) — specifically each person’s Moon sign (rashi) and birth star (nakshatra). That is why you need the birth date, time and place for both people: the Moon moves about one degree every two hours, so an accurate Moon position needs the birth time.

What are Nadi and Bhakoot dosha?

Nadi dosha occurs when both people share the same Nadi (constitution), scoring 0 of 8 — classically linked to health and progeny concerns. Bhakoot dosha comes from certain Moon-sign distances (like 6–8 or 2–12) and touches finances and family harmony. Both have well-known cancellation (parihara) rules — for example, same rashi with different nakshatras, or the two Moon-sign lords being the same or friends — which this tool accounts for.

Can we marry if the kundli does not match?

A low score or a dosha is a flag to look closer, not an automatic no. Many strong marriages have modest Guna Milan scores, and most doshas have classical remedies or cancellations. The honest answer needs both full kundlis — Manglik status, the 7th house and its lord, Venus, Jupiter and the marriage dasha timing — not just the 36-point number.
