The panchang is the Hindu almanac for a day. It has five parts — tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (moon star), yoga, karana and vara (weekday) — plus good and bad hours like Rahu Kaal, worked out from your local sunrise and sunset. Change the city and every timing changes with it.

Before you fix a date

Three quick checks before you pick a date

The panchang rates the day in general. These three checks rate it for you — against your own birth star and Moon sign. Tap through them, then see the fixes.

Does the day’s star favour yours?

Tarabala is the strength the sky lends your birth star (Janma Nakshatra). As the Moon moves through the 27 nakshatras, its daily position turns favourable or unfavourable to your star.

The 27 nakshatras are split into three sets of nine — each set a Paryaya (Navaka).

How to calculate: Count from your birth star to today’s star (counting both) and divide by 9. A remainder of 2, 4, 6, 8 or 9 (0) is favourable; 1, 3, 5 or 7 is weak.
✓Checking Tarabala is the basic first step before fixing any important event.
✓The muhurta chart itself matters most — a strong chart with well-placed planets counters many doshas.
✓A weak Tarabala can still proceed after the right parihara (remedy) — see the Remedies tab.
✓Discard it (no remedy works) when the weak tara falls in the first Paryaya for Janma, the second for Vipat, the third for Pratyak, or any Paryaya for Naidhana.

FAQ

Muhurta strength — questions

Quick answers on Tarabala, Chandrabala and Panchaka.

What is Tarabala in Vedic astrology?

Tarabala is the strength your birth star (Janma Nakshatra) lends a given day. Count from your birth star to the day’s nakshatra, counting both, and divide by 9: a remainder of 2, 4, 6, 8 or 9 (0) is favourable, while 1, 3, 5 or 7 is weak.

What is Chandrabala and how is it checked?

Chandrabala is the Moon’s support. Count from your Moon sign (Janma Rashi) to the sign the Moon occupies on the day of the event; counts of 1, 3, 6, 7, 10 or 11 give Chandrabala. The 8th position — Ashtama Chandra — is avoided.

How is Panchaka calculated?

Add the numbers of the tithi, weekday, nakshatra and the muhurta lagna, then divide by 9. Remainders of 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 are the inauspicious Mrityu, Agni, Raja, Chora and Roga Panchakas; remainders of 3, 5, 7 or 0 are good.

Can a weak Tarabala be corrected?

Yes, through Pariharas (remedial donations): yellow pumpkin or leafy vegetables for Janma Tara dosha, jaggery for Vipat, salt for Pratyak, and sesame (til) with gold for Naidhana — which is best avoided. A strong muhurta chart with well-placed planets also counters many doshas.
